Since 1995, every President has issued a proclamation that the month of March will be celebrated as Women's History Month to recognize the specific achievements women have made over the course of American history.
The actual celebration of Women's History Month began as a local celebration in 1978 in Santa Rose, CA where the local school district set aside a week to honor women's contributions to culture and history. The organizers selected the week of March 8 to correspond with International Women's Day.
The National Women's History Alliance designates a yearly theme for Women's History Month. The 2024 theme celebrates "Women Who Advocate for Equity, Diversity and Inclusion." This theme recognizes women who understand the need to eliminate bias and discrimination from individuals' lives and institutions.
On Tuesday, March 12, 2024 the NOCCCD Board of Trustees passed Resolution No. 23/24-18 to recognize Women's History Month, stating: "As an institution committed to fostering inclusivity, empowering individuals, and promoting equality, we seek to honor the exceptional achievements of women throughout history and in our community. By celebrating Women's History Month, we aim to educate, inspire, and advance the cause of gender equity within NOCCCD."
NOCCCD and its campuses celebrate Women's History Month with a variety of events.
